Three important steps to keeping your computer protected and running are:

  • Regular Backups
  • Virus Protection
  • Firewall

Regular Backups:
Hardware failure or data corruption are common and can occur without warning. Your best protection from losing your data is to perform regular backups. The best choice is to use backup software to backup your entire computer system using an off-site backup strategy. Your off-site strategy can be as simple as taking your backup media to an alternate location. There are also off-site backup services where the entire backup is maintained off-site, or services to pick up or rotate backup media for you. If full off-site backups are not in your budget or they don't make sense for your scenario, then consider backup up important data to CDs, DVDs, USB flash media or external hard drives. Houston Computing Services will be glad to help you implement a backup strategy to fit your needs.

Virus Protection:
With over 73,000 known computer viruses, virus protection software is important. We can help remove existing virus infections as well as implement a virus protection plan. Choosing the right anti-virus solution should take into account your operating system, environment and resources available on your computer.

Many computer attacks, operating system / software vulnerabilities and worms can be prevented by implementing a "firewall". A firewall is a hardware device or software that controls network traffic to and from a computer or network, permitting or denying communications based on a security policy. Many firewall programs block "too much" traffic by default which will prevent the sharing of files or printers, or other desired operations. A properly configured firewall will block the network traffic that you don't want, but allow the network traffic that you do want, based on your network and computer environment.

Houston Computing Services will be glad to help with any of the above services.
